Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer Arrives At Launch Site
One of the most complex space scientific instruments ever built, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) arrived at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, escorted by astronauts who will fly with it on the Space Shuttle in February 2011. The antimatter hunter AMS-02 began the first stage of its voyage to the International Space Station (ISS) from Geneva international airport, in Switzerland
Shrinking Atmospheric Layer Linked To Low Levels Of Solar Radiation
Large changes in the Sun's energy output may drive unexpectedly dramatic fluctuations in Earth's outer atmosphere, new research indicates. A new study links a recent, temporary shrinking of a high atmospheric layer with a sharp drop in the Sun's ultraviolet radiation levels. The research, led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Colorad
First Successful Corona Remote Sensing Satellite Marks 50 Year Anniversary
Lockheed Martin has congratulated the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) on the 50-year anniversary of the first Corona photo reconnaissance satellite image from space, which ushered in new space-based capabilities for the nation. First developed as a joint U.S. Air Force and Central Intelligence Agency program to provide surveillance fro
WISE Captures The Unicorn's Rose
Unicorns and roses are usually the stuff of fairy tales, but a new cosmic image taken by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Explorer (WISE) shows the Rosette nebula located within the constellation Monoceros, or the Unicorn. This flower-shaped nebula, also known by the less romantic name NGC 2237, is a huge star-forming cloud of dust and gas in our Milky Way galaxy. Estimates of the nebula's dista
Kepler Discovers Multiple Planets Transiting A Single Star
NASA's Kepler spacecraft has discovered the first confirmed planetary system with more than one planet crossing in front of, or transiting, the same star. The transit signatures of two distinct Saturn-sized planets were seen in the data for a sun-like star designated "Kepler-9." The planets were named Kepler-9b and 9c. The discovery incorporates seven months of observations of more than 15
Japan develops 'touchable' 3D TV technology
A Japanese research team said Thursday it had developed the world's first 3D television system that allows users to touch, pinch or poke images floating in front of them. "It is the first time that you can feel images in the air," said Norio Nakamura, senior scientist with the research team at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. "You can have the sense o
Sunlight Spawns Many Binary And 'Divorced' Binary Asteroids
The asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter is often depicted as a dull zone of dead rocks with an occasional wayward speedster smashing through on its way toward the sun. A new study appearing in the journal Nature paints a different picture, one of slow but steady change, where sunlight gradually drives asteroids to split in two and move far apart to become independent asteroids among the
Canadian PM Announces Support For Next Gen Of Satellites
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced support for the next phase of the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM), a system of three advanced remote sensing satellites. "By supporting the world-class RADARSAT Constellation Mission, our Government will ensure Canada maintains its role as a world leader in aerospace technology," Prime Minister Harper said. "This cutting-edge project w
NASA/NOAA Study Finds El Ninos Are Growing Stronger
A relatively new type of El Nino, which has its warmest waters in the central-equatorial Pacific Ocean, rather than in the eastern-equatorial Pacific, is becoming more common and progressively stronger, according to a new study by NASA and NOAA. The research may improve our understanding of the relationship between El Ninos and climate change, and has potentially significant implications for lon
The Strange Case Of Solar Flares And Radioactive Elements
It's a mystery that presented itself unexpectedly: The radioactive decay of some elements sitting quietly in laboratories on Earth seemed to be influenced by activities inside the sun, 93 million miles away. Is this possible? Researchers from Stanford and Purdue University believe it is. But their explanation of how it happens opens the door to yet another mystery. There is even an o
Opportunity Stops To Check Out Rocks
Opportunity has paused in her trek toward Endeavour crater to examine an exposed outcrop of rock that is of interest to the science team. On Sol 2336 (Aug. 19, 2010), the rover performed a 7-meter (23-foot) backward turn with a forward bump to approach the outcrop contact. On the next sol, Opportunity performed a short turn to place surface targets within reach of the robotic arm (Instrume
Some Asteroids Live In Own Little Worlds
While the common perception of asteroids is that they are giant rocks lumbering about in orbit, a new study shows they actually are constantly changing "little worlds" that can give birth to smaller asteroids that split off to start their own lives as they circle around the sun. Astronomers have known that small asteroids get "spun up" to fast rotation rates by sunlight falling on them, mu
